My Maytag restoration has been quite popular. I get a couple comments a month on it. As promised, I will now document the restoration of my 1 1/2 horsepower Racine Sattley. This engine was built and sold by Montgomery Ward and Co. from about 1916-1918. I have documented this using Montgomery Ward catalogs. About 1918 the Racine was dropped from the engine name. My 1 1/2 horsepower Sattley is identical in many ways.
This will be different than the Maytag restoration. I will break it down into categories and hyper link between them as I go along. For the record this project officially started on September 24, 2004. Prior to that, I spent many weeks cleaning the garage, and in the process I found both of my workbenches. I can now park both vehicles inside, a must for our climate, and work on the engine with the vehicles inside. Below is a picture of our work area, and you will notice the short one, Garrett, who will be helping me from time to time.
I have no idea how long this project will take. Documenting it definitely slows the process, but this should be a pretty comprehensive article for those that have a similar engine to restore. There is no right place to start this project although there are several wrong places one could start. Feel free to jump between pages if you prefer to do it another way. Link in blue are active. I will add more as the project continues.
My thanks to Jim Dunmyer for this web space. I also want to thank all those on his Oldengine list, and those on the ATIS stationary engine list. I have no doubt that many will be helping before this is all done.
Enjoy!!

The heater will be used later. Works to
about 32 degrees with the doors closed.
Fortunately we have many mild days during
the winter months.
Feel free to download or print any of the material for your own personal
