Any Idea Who Made This?

This little generator set belongs to a friend of mine and he has no idea who made it.
I've been told the engine resembles an Australian Southern Cross model P but there are
enough differences that I suspect they might share the same (possibly U. S.) parentage but
 not the same manufacturer.  I doubt that the color is original and there is the possibility that
things like the carburetor, muffler, etc. could have been changed over the years.
